The Local Bassanthwaite & Keswick Area...

Parkergate is extremely fortunate to be in a wonderful quiet location in the North Lakes of Cumbria, surrounded by magnificant Lakeland Fells and beautiful lake scenery. There is so much to do no matter what your interests are.

Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater are both close by and provide excellent watersports opportunites, though Derwentwater is more accessible for general use. Derwentwater Marina offers windsurfing, sailing, canoeing, rowing and powered boats for hire as well as tuition. Bassenthwaite Sailing Club offers the opportunity for more experienced sailing for guests with their own sailing dinghy.

The walking around this part of the Lake District National Park is second to none. Skiddaw, Blencathra, the Northern Caldbeck Fells and Coledale Fells are all in close proximity and it is possible to climb Skiddaw direct from Parkergate. For the less energetic, there are lovely walks around the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake and along the River Derwent, as well as lower, easier peaks such as Dodd and Binsey.

Parkergate is located not far from the well known Lake District Ospreys' nesting site. Cumbria's most popular birds returned safely to the area in 2008 following a hazardous 3,000 mile migration flight from East Africa. The famous pair has been re-united at Bassenthwaite Lake, and the birds have arrived back at the nest site they have used for the last four years. They can be viewed on the Osprey Project website - or even better, you can stay here and watch them virtually fly right past the window on their way to a favourite fishing site at Overwater!!

The view point at Dodd Wood is just down the road from us, where there are powerful telescopes avialable to view the magnificent birds fishing. You can also take in the Dodd Wood Forest Trails.

There are many other attractions to enjoy locally too, including Wordsworth House in Cockermouth, the Theatre By The Lake in Keswick, the Pencil Museum, Honister Slate Mine, Trotters World of Animals and Rheged Discovery Centre.

Keswick town centre itself, with its shops, restaurants and inns is only 7 miles away and we have a regular bus service on our road.

The nearest pub to Parkergate is the Sun Inn in Bassenthwaite village which is 1.5 miles from Parkergate provides very good pub food at reasonable prices. We also have the Ravenstone Hotel only 1/4 mile down the road which offers a 4 course dinner for £20 per person, which is excellent. The Snooty Fox at Uldale 4 miles away is quieter than the Sun. Lyzzick Hall is 3 miles towards Keswick and is terrific for special meals out.
